Gap- How can I redesign the eating area seating in the kitchen to make it more functional. I want an expanded seating area that takes up little room and can comfortably seat 5 but can expand up to 8 if needed.
Requirements:
I needed to seat 5 on a regular basis.
Expanded seating to 8 occasionally.
Small footprint in the room.
Needed to keep a bench seat under window. The children insisted on that.
Made from recycled and reclaimed materials.

Plan:
My initial plan is to build an L shaped bench that starts under the window and turns the corner to follow the back wall. The bench takes up less space than chairs and makes room for a slightly larger table. The part of the bench under the window will have built in storage. I have a garage full of reclaimed wood to use for the project. The table top will be 3/4 inch plywood with a tile top. I also have boxes of old tiles that I can use.

Reflection on Prototype:
I like the shape of the top. I found that the table took much less space in the kitchen than I thought it would. The seating is comfortable with 5 and a bit tight with 8. I can add about 6 inches to the length of the table and still have it fit well. The position of the legs on the side of the table near the bench is a problem. The leg position will make it hard to get in and out of the bench. Will have to experiment with leg placement before going to final prototype.
